Region: Posterior Spine

Origin: Transverse processes of the 1st - 5th thoracic vertebrae. 

Insertion: Transverse processes of the 2nd - 6th cervical vertebrae and sometimes to the atlas transverse process.

Isolated function: 
-Assists in concentric acceleration of lateral vertebral flexion.
-Assists in concentric acceleration of vertebral column extension.
-Assists in concentric acceleration of inferior pull on ribs.

Integrated function: 
-Assists in eccentric deceleration of contralateral vertebral extension.
-Assists in eccentric deceleration of vertebral column flexion.
-Assists in eccentric deceleration of superior pull on ribs.

Nerve Supply: Dorsal rami of the spinal nerves.
